Celtic need to be fully switched on with a “collective mentality” to keep their Champions League hopes alive at home to Atletico Madrid, said manager Brendan Rodgers.
Celtic sit bottom of Group E following two defeats, with the Spaniards leading the way on four points.
“We haven’t quite got what we deserved from the first two games so let’s go into this one and give it absolutely everything we have,” said Rodgers. “We need bravery and courage and let’s see if we can cause them some problems.”
Celtic picked up two red cards in their opening 2-0 loss away to Feyenoord, while Lazio struck in stoppage-time for a 2-1 win in Glasgow.
Atletico are on a run of six successive victories, with 16 goals scored. They sit fourth in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real Madrid, but with a game in hand on all the teams above them.
“It’s important if we are going to progress, we have to take something otherwise it’s a hugely difficult challenge,” added Rodgers.
“We know the task, Atletico are a fantastic team, one of the best in the world. They are very comfortable at this level.
“We can’t do what we do in normal games. This is a team and manager (Diego Simeone) that is too experienced for that.
“One of the biggest things at this level is concentration. You drop your guard for a second and you get punished.
“For us, it’s about having that collective mentality. There has to be a green and white block moving up and down the pitch. Everyone together.
“If we can do that and keep our concentration, we have a great chance against any team, especially here at home.”
Team news
Celtic are still without defender Maik Nawrocki despite a return to some training. Fellow centre-half Stephen Welsh and winger Liel Abada remain injured too.
Atletico’s Nahuel Molina returned from injury as a half-time substitute on Saturday, while Caglar Soyuncu was a late replacement having been out with a groin injury since September.
Jose Maria Gimenez, Reinildo Mandava and Thomas Lemar are still sidelined.
Choose your starting XI. It’s up to you how to approach it – you could go for the team you WANT the manager to pick or the one you THINK he will.
Why is a shirt causing controversy?
Atletico’s decision to wear a special strip commemorating their European Cup semi-final triumph over Celtic in 1974 has caused quite a stir. But why?
Well, the first leg – a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park – has lived on in infamy for Celtic fans for the overly aggressive tactics of their Spanish visitors.
Atletico had three players sent off in the second half, and Turkish referee Dogan Babacan booked all but two of their players as they targeted Celtic, and winger Jimmy Johnstone, in particular.
Ruben Diaz, one of those sent off, is said to have joked he should have been jailed for his tackles on Johnstone. Both teams had to be separated by police at the full-time whistle.
Johnstone and Celtic boss Jock Stein are alleged to have received death threats before the return leg, which the Spanish side won 2-0. That first match came to be known in Scotland as ‘The Shame Game’.
Celtic need ‘almost perfect performance’
Celtic defender Greg Taylor: “You have deliver an almost perfect performance in this competition. When the chances come, you have to take them. World class players will hurt you, so it’s about limiting those moments and controlling where they hurt you.
“We’re built for playing pressing, aggressive football. It’s what the club demands. We work every day to play that way.
“Performances have been close in the first two games but we haven’t given a full 90 minute performance. The team is gelling, domestically we are getting stronger, and we feel prepared to go and get the result we want.”
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone: “Celtic in their games against Lazio and Feyenoord, in the first 60-70 minutes they played at a really high tempo. They play very fast. They look to hit you on the transitions. They have a strong system that they stick to. They’ll press you up in your own half.
“It’s a really historic stadium. You can tell that. The history of 1974 and as well 1967, which my father told me about against Racing Club. So it’s a huge club one of the most historic in the world.”
