Former Air National Guardsman Wilmer Puello-Mota, facing child pornography charges, allegedly defected and joined the Russian army in its war against Ukraine, according to the Rhode Island attorney general’s office. Puello-Mota, a former security forces technical sergeant with the Massachusetts Air National Guard, fled the country following charges of possession of child pornography, prompting his removal from the National Guard in October 2022. Prior to joining the National Guard, Puello-Mota served in the active-duty Air Force as a security forces airman during the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing’s 2015 deployment to Afghanistan. He was also a city councilman in Holyoke, Massachusetts, from January 2022 to January 2024.
Puello-Mota was charged in 2020 with possession of child pornography after allegedly soliciting nude photos from a teenager. According to court documents, his last known location was Istanbul, Turkey, where he boarded a flight on Jan. 7, two days before he was scheduled to be in court for the child pornography charges, and left from Dulles International Airport in northern Virginia for Turkey. Social media posts from Puello-Mota and other users allegedly in Russia suggest that he joined the Russian army in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. While the authenticity of these posts is unclear, court documents consider them evidence that Puello-Mota has left U.S. jurisdiction.
The 104th Fighter Wing in Massachusetts emphasized that the charges against Puello-Mota are “very serious” and that criminal activity is not tolerated in their ranks. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha stated that the state has received photos and videos purporting to show Puello-Mota in Russia and Ukraine, allegedly serving in the Russian military. Neronha noted that the authenticity of these materials cannot be verified, but if they are accurate, Puello-Mota is well beyond the jurisdiction of the court. If the photos and videos are false, it suggests that Puello-Mota is attempting to conceal his whereabouts through an elaborate ruse.
The case of Wilmer Puello-Mota highlights the complexities of dealing with criminal charges and military service. Puello-Mota’s decision to defect and join the Russian army in Ukraine adds another layer of complication to the legal proceedings against him. The social media posts alleging his involvement in the conflict raise questions about his motivations and the consequences of his actions. The involvement of multiple jurisdictions, including the U.S. and Russia, further complicates the situation and raises challenges for law enforcement officials seeking to bring Puello-Mota to justice.
The allegations against Puello-Mota underscore the potential risks and consequences of criminal behavior, particularly for individuals serving in the military. The serious nature of the charges he faces, along with his decision to flee the country and join a foreign military in a conflict zone, have far-reaching implications. The involvement of multiple agencies and jurisdictions in the case further complicates the legal proceedings and highlights the challenges of addressing such complex situations. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine adds another dimension to the case, raising questions about the impact of individual actions on a broader geopolitical scale.
Overall, the case of Wilmer Puello-Mota represents a unique and complex legal situation with implications for both the military and law enforcement.
